The energy transition is not just about big cities or industrial plants: even the most remote locations can become concrete examples of sustainability thanks to innovative solutions.

In this case history, we present the pilot project developed by Powertronix in the heart of the Northern European mountains, where a remote cabin—accessible only on foot after five hours of hiking or by helicopter—has become fully energy independent thanks to the lithium batteries supplied by Archimede Energia.

In such a unique context, every liter of diesel fuel transported by helicopter represented a high cost, both economically and environmentally.

The energy challenge in remote areas

Reducing fossil fuel consumption in extreme environments is one of the greatest challenges of the energy transition. The cabin in this project was in a typical off-grid condition: no access to the national grid and heavy logistical difficulties that made fuel supply costly and unsustainable.

Together with Powertronix, we designed and installed a hybrid system combining renewable energy and advanced storage technologies.

The technical solution: solar power, lithium storage, and smart energy management

The project integrated:

  • Photovoltaic panels to generate renewable energy at high altitude
  • Archimede Energia lithium battery systems, robust and safe, to ensure continuity even without sunlight
  • Powertronix energy management solutions to optimize energy flows, reduce waste, and improve efficiency

Thanks to this configuration, the use of the diesel generator was drastically reduced, enabling a previously unthinkable level of off-grid energy autonomy.

The strategic role of Archimede lithium batteries

At the heart of the system are 16 Archimede Energia lithium batteries, configured in clusters of 4 parallels with 2 batteries in series. Each series includes a 388.8V battery and a 345.6V battery with 48Ah capacity, creating a complete system of 734.4V at 192Ah.

This architecture guarantees:

  • Reliable and safe energy storage
  • Optimal management of high and variable loads, typical in isolated environments
  • Long-lasting performance, reducing maintenance and replacement costs

Smart monitoring with AE-Portal and Powertronix

A distinctive feature of the project was the use of AE-Portal, Archimede Energia’s IoT platform for remote battery monitoring, combined with the Powertronix portal.

With this system, operators can:

  • Monitor battery status in real time
  • Optimize performance and energy flows
  • Prevent anomalies and ensure maximum operational efficiency

Remote monitoring proved essential in such an isolated context, where interventions are logistically complex and expensive.

Tangible results: independence and sustainability

The integration of solar power, Archimede storage systems, and Powertronix solutions delivered concrete results:

  • Drastic reduction in diesel consumption
  • Greater independence from external supplies
  • Lower procurement and transport costs
  • Improved environmental sustainability

The cabin has become fully energy autonomous, demonstrating how lithium batteries are the key to delivering clean energy even in the most extreme locations.

What does off-grid energy independence mean?

Off-grid energy independence is the ability of a building or facility to produce and use electricity without relying on the national grid. In other words, an off-grid system is self-sufficient, based on renewable sources and energy storage that guarantee continuity even when disconnected from the grid.

The key components of an off-grid system are:

  • Solar panels for clean energy generation
  • Lithium batteries for safe and durable energy storage
  • A smart management system to regulate energy flows, maximize efficiency, and minimize waste

This configuration is essential in remote or hard-to-reach areas (mountain huts, alpine refuges, islands, isolated construction sites), but it is also ideal for anyone seeking energy independence and sustainability.
